Compensation alone can never fully make up for personal tragedies, but it can help the victim of an accident and their family adjust to the changes in circumstances knowing that essential care needs can be met and paid for.
In one case, a young man left permanently disabled by a motorbike crash in which his father died has been guaranteed a lifetime of security following a multi-million-pound settlement of his case.
He was aged 10 at the time of the accident. He was riding pillion on his father's motorbike and was thrown to the ground when his father lost control of the machine. The boy suffered a very serious traumatic brain injury. He made a good recovery from his orthopaedic injuries and, although he will forever remain vulnerable, will be capable of leading a constructive and meaningful life with professional support.
Lawyers acting on his behalf sued his father's motor insurers, who did not dispute liability. The agreed compensation package took the form of a £1.9 million lump sum, plus index-linked and tax-free payments of £130,000 a year to cover the costs of his care for life. The High Court approved the settlement.
