Boy, 10, Awarded More Than £6 Million for Negligent Neo-Natal Care

The family of a 10-year-old boy who faces a lifetime of disability due to negligent post-natal care have secured a compensation package worth more than £6 million to cover the cost of his future care needs.

The boy suffered a severe and enduring brain injury as a result of hypoglycaemia – dangerously low blood sugar levels – in the 48 hours after his birth. His legal team claimed that midwives had failed to notice clear signs that he was seriously unwell and that his condition could easily have been treated had they acted in time.

In addition to his physical disabilities, he has been left suffering from learning difficulties and epilepsy and will always be dependent on others' care. However, he has shown great fortitude in making the most of his life with the support of his parents.

Lawyers acting on behalf of the family sued the NHS trust responsible for the midwifery staff concerned. The trust admitted liability in full, issued a public apology and agreed to a settlement of the case which the High Court had no hesitation in approving.
