Probate Registry backlogs

Executors and Administrators facing delays due to Probate Registry backlogs

There have been significant delays in the issuing of Grants while Probate Registries across the country are attempting to process a backlog of applications which has built up. The backlog follows the implementation of a new IT system at the registries, the roll out of a new style Grant document and a spike in the number of probate applications made in response to proposals for significant increases to probate application fees.

Grants were typically expected to be issued 2-3 weeks following submission but the local registry have confirmed that they are currently working on applications submitted some 5 weeks ago. The disruption has lead to a decision by the Probate Registry service to limit enquiries to the service and telephone lines at all probate Registries will be unavailable from 2pm onwards on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the foreseeable future.

Glanvilles are in ensuring that we are abreast of the situation at Winchester Probate Registry, with regular updates, so that we can advise our executor and administrator clients, estate agents, agents and business contacts accordingly.
